Constantin Oțet is the coach behind Universitatea Craiova’s greatest European achievement: reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals.
Between 1968 and 1977 he had his first spell on Universitatea’s coaching staff, during which he won the national youth championship twice, in 1968–1969 and 1975–1976, and was assistant coach in the season of the first league title, 1973–1974. Also as an assistant, he won the league with FC Argeș (1978–1979), then worked alongside Nelu Oblemenco as Știința won the 1980–1981 title. From 1981 to 1984 he led the Oltenian side to the semi-final against Benfica.
After the 1989 Revolution, Constantin Oțet achieved notable success in the Arab world: he won the Hosni Mubarak Cup with Damanhour (Egypt), the Gulf Club Champions Cup with Al Nassr Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), and the league and cup with Al-Jaish (Damascus), a team he also took to the final of the Arab Cup Winners’ Cup.
