Biography
A one-hundred-percent product of the Craiova football school, Adrian Popescu made his senior debut for Universitatea at 20, just when the side was dominated by the great players of Craiova Maxima. He held his own in that extraordinary squad and, little by little, became a regular. In 1991, aged 31, he captained Universitatea as the team won the league title and the Romanian Cup. In 1992 he left for Locarno in Switzerland, where he played three seasons. Back in Romania, he carried on playing until the age of 40, for U Craiova, Electro, Constructorul and Poli Iași.
Although he made his international debut late, Adrian Popescu was in Romania’s squad for the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy.
